Angkor and Phnom Penh

(7 days - tour code CAKPP07)

Day 01: Phnom Penh

After arrival we transfer you to your hotel to check-in whereafter we start our tour. Today we visit Wat Phnom, Royal Castle, Silver Pagoda, National Musuem, Central Market and we take you on a tour around the city.

Day 2:From Phnom Penh to Kompong Thom

Via Kompong Cham we drive towards Kompong Thom. In this region the hill of Phnom Pros (hill of the men) and the hill of the Phnom Srei (hill of the women) are situated. These sites are famous for their old sanctuaries. Kompong Cham is a small charming city with colonial architecture, banked on the Mekong riverside. Before arriving in Kompong Thom, we visit the Kuhak Nokor and the Phum Prasat temples.

Day 03: Region of Kompong Thom

Today we visit Sambor Prei Kuk, a complex of the most famous pre-angkorienan monuments of Cambodia, with more than 100 temples... overtaken by tropical lush and vegetation. After archeological discovery of that site they found out that this site was probably the capital of the Chenla Royal in the 7th century. We return to Kompong Thom to visit some temples in the surrounding, like: Prasat Andet, Prasat Thor, Prasat Yeay Peoun and Phnom Santuk. We reach the last one after climbing 900 steps...!

Day 04: Road to Siem Reap via Beng Mealea

Today we drive towards Siem Reap and will stopover in Kompong Kdei to admire the Naga bridge from the Angkor period. Later on we take our 4WD to discover the Khmer site Beng Mealea. Not very famous, completely off beaten track and only exposed to foreign visitors since the year 2000, because the zone was controlled by red Khmers and there were some political combats in 1997.It’s situated only 6 km from Phnom Kulen Mountain and 40 km from Angkor Thom. But to get there, we have to do a serious dirt track tour, which will take between 2/3 hours, crossing rural landscapes and traditional villages. In the middle of the jungle we find the temple constructed of sandstone, built on a surface of 108 hectare, dating back out of the 11th century. The temple is surrounded by stretching trench systems. Nature took over completely on this site, which gives it a particular mystic ambiance. We organize a pick-nick on site before we return to SiemReap.

Day 05: Angkor Thom

We visit the complex of Angkor Thom, including the sites Bayon, Elephants and Lépreux King Terrace, Tep Pranam, Prah Palilay, Phimeanakas, Baphuon. In the afternoon we visit the "Small Circuit": Takeo, Ta Prohm, Banteay Kdei, Sras Srang Terrasse , Prasat Kravan. We return to Siem Reap by Bakheng mountain to admire the stunning sunset behind the temples of Angkor Wat.

Day 07: Tonle Sap Lake and flight to Saigon

In the morning, we will do an excursion to Tonlé Sap Lake, a lake connected to the Mekong River by a canal of 100 km long. During the water floods of the Mekong River in the rainy season, this lake is around 7500 km² large and 10m deep! (Dry season: 3000km² large and 2 m deep) Tonle Sap lake serves as a ‘solution’ for the floods of the Mekong River, allowing to avoid devastating floods downstream. We enter a boat and cruise around the lake, chat with the local fishermen and visit Chongnea, the lake-side village on stilts. In the afternoon, we visit an old traditional market and a handicraft school. Afterwards transferring you to the airport for your departure flight.
