Day 04: Road to Siem Reap via Beng Mealea

Today we drive towards Siem Reap and will stopover in Kompong Kdei to admire the Naga bridge from the Angkor period. Later on we take our 4WD to discover the Khmer site Beng Mealea. Not very famous, completely off beaten track and only exposed to foreign visitors since the year 2000, because the zone was controlled by red Khmers and there were some political combats in 1997.It’s situated only 6 km from Phnom Kulen Mountain and 40 km from Angkor Thom. But to get there, we have to do a serious dirt track tour, which will take between 2/3 hours, crossing rural landscapes and traditional villages. In the middle of the jungle we find the temple constructed of sandstone, built on a surface of 108 hectare, dating back out of the 11th century. The temple is surrounded by stretching trench systems. Nature took over completely on this site, which gives it a particular mystic ambiance. We organize a pick-nick on site before we return to SiemReap.

During the water floods of the Mekong River in the rainy season, this lake is around 7500 km² large and 10m deep! (Dry season: 3000km² large and 2 m deep) Tonle Sap lake serves as a ‘solution’ for the floods of the Mekong River, allowing to avoid devastating floods downstream. We enter a boat and cruise around the lake, chat with the local fishermen and visit Chongnea, the lake-side village on stilts. In the afternoon, we visit an old traditional market and a handicraft school. Afterwards transferring you to the airport for your departure flight.
